The
first time I had visited Crown Point Press gallery, an exhibition about
landscape gathered several artists. Among them : Robert Bechtle. I had been in
San Francisco for several weeks then and my eyes were immediatly attracted by
his cityscapes.
The
pointillist realism of Robert Bechtle catchs the essence of the city. His prints
of ordinary houses, of empty streets, of slopes that go up to the sky or go
down to the Bay reproduce the special atmosphere of San Francisco. But his
subject is not so much cityscapes as light and shadow. The misty character of
light that tones down colors and envelops San Francisco with a shroud of
mystery.
For
this reason the cityspaces of Robert Bechtle are indelibly printed on my
pupils.
